Irish travellers heading abroad for Easter sunshine are being urged to exercise caution, as severe weather is set to impact major holiday hotspots. Spain, particularly the Canary Islands, is bracing for extreme weather in the coming days.

Torrential downpours over the weekend have already caused chaos across the Canary Islands, flooding homes and making several roads impassable. Meteorologists now warn that the situation could worsen, with the looming threat of Storm Olivier bringing heavy hail and violent thunderstorms.

According to reports, parts of the Canary Islands received more than a year’s worth of rainfall within just a few hours. Emergency services were stretched thin, responding to over 150 incidents in Costa Teguise and more than 70 in Arrecife.

In response to the escalating conditions, the Department of Foreign Affairs has updated its travel guidance for Irish citizens planning to visit the islands, urging caution and awareness of local advisories.
